Policeman’s Dogging Mistake

A copper investigating Dogging in the Clent Hills, Worcestershire thought he saw bright car headlights and called for backup, only to find out the bright light was in fact the Moon.

The Moon

The mysterious bright light beaming steadily in the distance over the pitch dark hills meant only one thing to a local copper. Trouble.

One can imagine his breathless voice as the fearless PC, with heart pounding and nerves jangling, radioed his sergeant back at the Police station about a ‘suspicious light source’ glowing over the Clent Hills in Worcestershire, and that he was off ‘up the hills’ to investigate, and that he may need back up.

Car Headlights

It’s also possible to imagine his red face, when twenty minutes later, he reported that the ‘suspicious’ light turned he had discovered turned out to be nothing more than the glare of a full moon.

Clent Hills is notorious as a Dogging Hotspot, and it’s believed the officer thought he may catch offenders in the act when he mistook the bright light of the moon for car headlights.

The tale was reported in September’s edition of Police magazine, which is distributed by the Police Federation to over 100,000 officers across England and Wales.

The magazine’s Dogberry column reported ‘While single-crewed on night duty in Worcestershire a PC called up his sergeant letting him know that he was going up into the Clent Hills to investigate a “suspicious bright light” that he could see shining from the other side of the hills. he call was for safety reasons as he might need back-up once he found the source. Twenty minutes later the PC called his sergeant back to reassure him that everything was OK and that he had found the source of the light. This diligent PC had in fact discovered the moon.’

A police source said : ‘The officer was a little reluctant to come back on duty the next day. He knew he was going to get a ribbing and he’s had pictures of werewolves put on his locker by some of the more unforgiving officers. It will take a long time for him to live this one down.’

Needless to say, no arrests were made on the night.
